NVIDIA recently launched DLSS 5, a new generation of its AI-powered upscaling, smoothing, and rendering technology. In the latest KOJI10 podcast published on 6/10/2026 by Ramón Varela, director Hideo Kojima discussed his reaction after seeing the technology applied to Death Stranding 2, noting that it can push CGI characters close to the uncanny valley with a real-people appearance.
While DLSS 5 analyzes image information to display new material details and lighting improvements that provide a photorealistic look, Kojima expressed mixed feelings. He stated that the technology does not understand the original intentions of creators, which could alter an author's message or modify lighting configurations chosen for specific reasons.
Kojima mentioned that while AI could easily handle tasks like automatically restoring old films in 4K, he would not want someone heavily modifying his own original work unless he controlled the AI himself. Meanwhile, other creators have different views on DLSS 5, as Daniel Vávra praised the results and Capcom believes criticisms regarding Resident Evil Requiem highlight their good work.
