Grand Theft Auto 6 faced a delay from its original May release window to November. Rockstar Games leadership cited the need to ensure the title meets expected quality standards, though internal production challenges regarding the game's massive scope also played a significant role.
Co-head of development Rob Nelson described the projections for the number of NPCs needed to populate the game's setting of Leonida as "horrifying." To manage this workload, the studio established a dedicated team in Los Angeles tasked with art-directing every individual NPC, resulting in over 10 times as many unique animations compared to Grand Theft Auto 5.
Phil Hooker, another development co-head, noted that the decision to shift the release date was made when it became clear that certain areas would not meet the desired quality benchmarks. The team prioritized the game's overall vision over adhering to the initial schedule.
While the creation of a temporary studio to handle writing and production tasks is notable, it raises questions about the sustainability of such large-scale development practices. Despite these concerns, the decision to employ human writers rather than relying on automation for background details is viewed as a commendable effort to maintain the game's worldbuilding texture.
