During the 90s, Nintendo of America released unique shaped soundtrack CDs featuring the faces of Yoshi and Diddy Kong. These promotional items were designed for the soundtracks of Yoshi's Story and Diddy Kong Racing, respectively.
While the discs functioned for audio playback, their irregular shapes limited storage capacity. The design required specific hardware with a central mounting pivot to operate correctly.
Users who ignored instructions and inserted these discs into slot-loading players or devices lacking proper support often destroyed their hardware. Reports indicate that the discs would spin uncontrollably, creating loud noises as they damaged the internal mechanisms of the players.
The North American releases were limited compared to Japanese versions published by Pony Canyon. The 1997 Yoshi's Story soundtrack in the United States contained 15 tracks, whereas the 1998 Japanese release featured 50 tracks. Similarly, the 1997 Diddy Kong Racing disc included 16 tracks composed by David Wise.
