On October 13, Microsoft officially announced the formation of XBOX LABS, a new technical experimental team led by Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet. The group, comprised of developers, engineers, and scientists, aims to investigate the application of emerging technologies within gaming.

The initiative focuses on several technical areas, including game decompilation and recompilation, cross-platform porting, and the integration of AI. Specifically, the team will explore running games on unsupported hardware, porting Windows PC titles to Apple Silicon, and utilizing WebAssembly and WebGPU to enable browser-based gaming.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma noted that these experiments challenge traditional industry norms regarding software-hardware dependency and the boundaries between playing and creating. By leveraging AI agents capable of writing and testing code, the team hopes to make games more accessible and empower players to become creators.

XBOX LABS will operate with an open development approach, sharing tools with the broader industry. While the team explores new possibilities, Xbox maintains that this does not alter its core business strategy, which remains focused on existing hardware, software development, and intellectual property management.
