Sega and Creative Assembly recently launched Total War: Shogun 2 - Complete Edition, aiming to provide an enhanced version of the 2011 strategy classic. However, the release has been met with an "Overwhelmingly Negative" consensus on Steam, with 83% of user reviews expressing dissatisfaction just one day after launch.
Players have criticized the update for introducing new bugs while failing to address existing ones, such as issues with ninja balancing. Furthermore, users report that the game lacks stability and performance improvements, noting the removal of Steam Workshop support and a higher price point compared to the original title, which has been delisted.
The update's visual enhancements, including 1440p and 4K UI scaling, have drawn significant scrutiny. Community members on Reddit have accused the developers of using generative AI to upscale graphics, resulting in what some describe as "wonky hallucinations." Roland MacDonald, the original artist for the game's unit portraits, allegedly labeled the updated visuals as "very lazy" and criticized the decision to charge for the changes.
Neither Sega nor Creative Assembly has provided an official response to the community's complaints. The developers and co-developer Mataboo have not disclosed whether generative AI technology was utilized in the production of the updated assets.
