Valve has released a new Steam client beta update that introduces several refinements to the platform. A significant change for Linux users is that Windows programs added to the library as non-Steam games will now automatically launch using Proton by default.

This update aims to streamline the user experience by removing manual configuration steps. By defaulting to Proton, Valve intends to reduce the compatibility burden on consumers, who previously had to manually adjust settings if an application failed to start.

Beyond compatibility improvements, the beta addresses various technical issues. These include fixes for library playtime display errors, controller reordering bugs on Linux, and a problem where Steam Controller BLE mode would remain stuck when a host device was missing.

Additional changes include a new option to disable the screensaver during gameplay and fixes for issues where non-Steam games failed to launch after modifying the target binary. The update also resolves a bug where the stop button failed to terminate games launched by external tools.
