Former Nintendo public relations managers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang recently disclosed that the company was unhappy with a 2021 Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Elon Musk as Wario. The skit, which depicted the character on trial for murdering Mario, was reportedly not well-received by the organization.

The former employees noted that the sketch was poorly timed, as there were no active Wario products or games being promoted at the time. Furthermore, the content of the performance crossed into uncomfortable territory for the brand, as it featured mature themes including drug references and sexualized depictions of characters like Luigi and Princess Peach.

Ellis and Yang suggested that Nintendo likely took issue with the portrayal of its family-oriented intellectual properties as sexual deviants. This reaction stands in contrast to other SNL parodies, such as a recent sketch comparing The Legend of Zelda to GTA 6, which the former managers speculated was received more favorably by the company.
