Nintendo is set to release a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Switch 2 in autumn 2026. This title marks a significant departure from the open-world design popularized by Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, opting instead for a strictly linear structure.

The remake maintains the original 1998 architectural design, requiring players to follow a specific path through geographic zones and closed dungeons. Players must acquire essential items like the hookshot or bow to overcome obstacles and progress, contrasting with the absolute freedom found in recent franchise entries.

To modernize the experience, Nintendo has implemented several ergonomic improvements. These include a free 360-degree camera, manual jumping, gyroscopic aiming, and a consistent 60 frames per second display. Additional quality-of-life updates, such as quick equipment assignment and the removal of cumbersome menu navigation for items like the Iron Boots, aim to reduce player frustration.

While some may view this linear approach as a regression compared to modern open-world standards, the game offers a condensed 25 to 30-hour experience. This focused design serves as a potential alternative to the fatigue often associated with vast, repetitive open-world titles, providing a structured narrative without the time-consuming exploration typical of recent Zelda games.
