Business coach Martijn van Zwieten explains that running an indie game studio requires building long-term structures alongside the game itself. Having spent 15 years working in games and five years coaching leadership teams, van Zwieten developed the FIRM framework, which stands for Future, Issues, Rocks, and Meetings.

At its most basic level, a studio operates as a for-profit company that offers a game to players in exchange for money, aiming to generate more value than production costs. Zooming in, any studio consists of a team, created games or IP, and an audience or community for distribution and marketing.

According to Execution Labs co-founder Jason Della Rocca, these three core elements fully determine investor valuation. Stronger teams, intellectual property, and communities increase the likelihood of securing investment, meaning founders must focus on all components at all times.

To establish a distinct studio purpose, founders can utilize Jim Collins' Hedgehog Concept from his 2001 book Good to Great. By identifying team passions, potential global excellence, and economic drivers, studios can make intentional decisions and attract the right people.
