While Dragon Ball is known for its dramatic moments and frequent character resurrections via the Dragon Balls, the series established early on that death is a constant threat. Many fans associate tragic losses with characters like Krillin or Muten Roshi, but the most significant early death occurred long before those events.
The first character to die in the series was Gohan, Goku's grandfather. Although initially described as the victim of a giant monster, it was later revealed that Goku killed him unintentionally while transformed into an Ozaru during a full moon. Goku only realized this truth years later during his battle with Vegeta.
Gohan remains one of the few characters who never returns to life. During the Baba the Fortune Teller tournament, he expressed contentment with his existence in the afterlife. Furthermore, Dragon Ball resurrection rules prevent his return, as the wishes are limited to those who died within the previous 12 months.
