Garry Newman, the creator of Garry’s Mod, has announced significant changes for the spiritual successor S&box after the project failed to gain traction since its April launch. Newman expressed personal embarrassment regarding the current state of the platform, noting that it suffers from poor player retention and holds a 47% positive rating on Steam.
Facepunch Studios intends to pivot its development focus toward the core sandbox experience rather than prioritizing engine tools. Planned updates include the addition of more vehicles and NPCs, alongside enhancements to multiplayer functionality and customization options. The studio aims to achieve parity with the original Garry’s Mod, which has sold over 25 million copies.
The platform's discovery system is also undergoing a redesign. Newman admitted that the previous vision of a vast, Netflix-style library was undermined by an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content. Consequently, the team will shift toward a curated approach to highlight popular games and will transition infrastructure support to the Steam Workshop.
To grow the player base, S&box is scheduled to transition to a free-to-play model by the end of 2026. Current owners will be compensated with exclusive Steam inventory items, with additional rewards for those who purchased the game at the $20 price point. Newman stated that the studio prioritizes player acquisition over entry fees.
