The Epic Games Store team has released a preview build of a new store launcher, which the company claims is faster than Steam. Epic describes the software as "vibe coded," a process where AI generates code without the developers necessarily understanding the underlying mechanics.

Performance metrics provided by Epic suggest the new launcher boots in 5.47 seconds, reportedly 46% faster than Valve’s storefront on a cold start. Additionally, the company claims the interface is 14% faster when restoring from the system tray to the library.

The preview build offers a lighter feature set, described by Epic as a "speedboat" rather than a "yacht," though it includes a shopping cart, voice chat, and improved library navigation. However, the reliance on AI-generated code has raised concerns regarding potential security vulnerabilities and long-term software maintainability.

This release aligns with CEO Tim Sweeney’s strategy of "maximum AI acceleration" at Epic. Sweeney intends to retool development teams to leverage AI for creating more content, despite previous controversies involving AI-generated assets in Fortnite.
