Munich-based database engine CedarDB is addressing the traditional divide between operational and analytical databases. CEO Moritz Sichert notes that the platform, which emerged from a decade of development, is designed to handle both transaction records and complex analytical queries simultaneously, a capability increasingly relevant for agentic AI.

Originating as a Technical University of Munich spinout based on the Umbra research project, the engine prioritizes hardware efficiency. By maintaining compatibility with PostgreSQL, CedarDB allows users to integrate the system without rebuilding existing applications, while also aligning with the training logic of large language models.

Following an initial launch of on-premise and community editions alongside a €5.3 million seed round in May of last year, the company has now announced limited availability for CedarDB Cloud. This managed service aims to broaden the startup's reach beyond large enterprises and improve its competitive standing against industry rivals like Databricks.

While Databricks has similarly moved toward unifying data architectures to support the agentic era, Sichert views this as validation of CedarDB's approach. The startup currently operates with a team of 14, with plans to expand its workforce and seek further funding as it gains market traction.
