When developing the first title in The Witcher franchise, CD Projekt Red aimed to stay faithful to Andrzej Sapkowski's original story by reflecting the protagonist's intimate encounters. However, the studio unexpectedly ran into a serious issue regarding how these romantic elements were represented.
In the game, Geralt of Rivia could maintain relationships with more than twenty women over a relatively short period. While the original books spread similar escapades across thirty years, concentrating them into a single game created the impression of extreme promiscuity.
The main controversy stemmed from the developer's chosen representation method. For every woman Geralt slept with, players received a collectible card featuring a suggestive or explicitly graphic static image, turning romantic encounters into a catch-'em-all collection.
Narrative designer and writer Karol Kowalczyk explained that the controversial feature actually stemmed from a simpler production necessity. During the final development stage, the studio used cards as a shortcut to represent these events without animating every scene.
Subsequent installments abandoned the collectible cards entirely, opting instead for cinematic sequences to depict Geralt's romantic escapades in a different manner.
