Chiptune rock band Anamanaguchi, formed in 2004, is set to perform a full-band concert in Japan on October 13 at Shibuya duo MUSIC EXCHANGE. This marks their first full-member appearance in the country since the 2011 Blip Festival Tokyo.
The band, consisting of Peter Berkman, Ary Warnaar, Luke Silas, and James DeVito, blends digital chiptune sounds from NES and Game Boy hardware with traditional rock instrumentation. Berkman notes that using game hardware is a practical, precise method for live performance that allows for creative programming.
Berkman attributes significant influence to Japanese culture, citing games like The Legend of Zelda and Mega Man as foundational. He also expresses deep respect for Japanese artists including Cornelius, Hi-STANDARD, and the label Usagi-Chang Records, which shaped the band's early musical sensibilities.
While the band has gained global recognition through projects like the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack and collaborations with Hatsune Miku, Berkman feels these works sometimes overshadow the band's own identity. He hopes this upcoming performance will foster a longer, more direct relationship with the Japanese music scene.
