Bill Van Zyll, Vice President and General Manager of Nintendo Latin America, stated that the company has no plans to discontinue physical media. Speaking during an interview at the Brazil Game Show 2026, Van Zyll emphasized that Nintendo maintains a neutral stance, prioritizing consumer preferences and acknowledging the strong attachment fans have to physical formats.
Van Zyll explained that physical editions incur various costs, including manufacturing, logistics, and inventory, which naturally leads to price differences compared to digital versions. While Nintendo’s global software revenue for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027 showed a 61.5% digital ratio, the executive noted that physical media remains particularly popular in Latin America due to its collectibility and the ability to trade or lend games.
The landscape for physical media is evolving across the industry. While Nintendo continues to support physical formats for the Switch 2, some titles now utilize key cards that require additional data downloads. Meanwhile, Sony has announced the end of physical disc production for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028, shifting toward digital-only distribution.
Despite these shifts and capacity constraints affecting modern releases, Van Zyll’s comments suggest that physical media culture will persist in various forms. As the industry balances digital efficiency with consumer demand, the format of physical releases continues to adapt to changing technological and economic conditions.
