Bill van Zyll, Vice President and General Manager of Nintendo Latin America, recently stated that the company has no plans to discontinue physical media. In an interview with YouTuber Coelho no Japão, Zyll emphasized that Nintendo recognizes the strong preference many fans have for physical formats and intends to maintain a neutral stance between digital and physical options.
Zyll noted that the current hardware design of the Nintendo Switch 2, which includes a game card slot across its models, supports the continued distribution of physical media. This approach contrasts with some competitors that offer digital-only hardware models, reflecting Nintendo's commitment to consumer preferences despite the broader industry trend toward digital-only distribution.
Regarding pricing, Zyll explained that differences between digital and physical versions are logical, accounting for factors like microchip costs, logistics, and packaging expenses. While physical media remains popular in regions like Latin America for its collectibility and ease of sharing, the company is exploring cost-saving alternatives like key cards, which require online downloads for the full game.
While these comments provide reassurance to physical media enthusiasts, it is important to note that Zyll’s remarks were made during an interview and do not constitute an official corporate announcement. Furthermore, the discussion specifically addressed regional circumstances in Latin America, leaving the broader global strategy subject to future developments.
