German developer Keen Games has officially launched Enshrouded, an ambitious open-world survival action-RPG. Following an early access period, the 1.0 release introduces a new volcanic biome, an increased level cap of 50, and additional dungeons. The game tasks players with restoring the kingdom of Embervale, which has been corrupted by a toxic fog.
The game distinguishes itself through a fully destructible voxel-based world. Players can manipulate terrain, excavate mountains, or build complex structures. This system is complemented by intuitive quality-of-life features, such as interconnected magic chests and automated inventory sorting, which streamline the crafting and building experience.
Reviewers highlight the game's artistic direction and dynamic movement, facilitated by a glider and grappling hook. However, the experience faces criticism for its static world design. Areas outside of player-controlled bases reset within an hour, which can undo progress like excavated tunnels. Additionally, combat is described as repetitive, and the fishing mechanic is labeled as tedious.
Despite these limitations, the title offers a massive, handcrafted world with significant longevity, requiring nearly a hundred hours for a standard playthrough. While the version tested prior to launch suffered from frequent crashes, bugs, and poor localization, the game remains a compelling entry for fans of RPGs and survival mechanics.
