Sony has officially unveiled a new digital Midnight Black PlayStation 5 console priced at 55,000 Yen, which converts to approximately $350. This hardware is scheduled for release on November 19, coinciding with the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The console features a specific colorway and is restricted by regional software requirements. According to Sony, the device is only functional when linked to a PlayStation account configured with the Japanese language and Japan set as the country or region.
This release follows a trend of Japan-exclusive hardware, mirroring a similar digital model introduced in November 2025. The current market environment remains challenging, as Sony previously increased prices for the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro in the United States during March 2026 due to rising costs associated with AI datacenters.
Given the ongoing hardware price volatility, which has seen used PS5 Pro units reach $1,400, a global release for this affordable model appears unlikely. While the Midnight Black aesthetic differs from existing retail options, the console remains effectively limited to the Japanese market for the foreseeable future.
