Rockstar Games leadership has expressed confidence that future titles will not require the same eight-year development duration as GTA 6. Developers Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut stated that the foundational engine and tool improvements established during the current project will enable the studio to produce content more efficiently moving forward.
The studio plans to shift its strategy toward building "more sideways than upwards," leveraging existing technology rather than dismantling and rebuilding core systems for every new release. Garbut noted that the team has completed significant foundational changes that they do not intend to rip apart for future projects.
Despite these assertions, the report highlights that similar logic was applied during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2. At that time, Rockstar consolidated resources to finish the western title, which ultimately delayed GTA 6 by several years. Critics suggest that relying on previous "cowboy tech" did not significantly expedite the development process for the current game as originally anticipated.
Beyond development timelines, the studio faces internal challenges, including employment tribunal proceedings regarding the termination of 34 staff members. While the company cites concerns over confidential information, the IWGB Union alleges the move was motivated by union busting. Meanwhile, remaining employees continue to push for voluntary union recognition.
