A Reddit user known as u/cal93 discovered their second-hand computer was remotely disabled after a Windows update. The device, purchased for $650 on OfferUp, was identified by Fragile—the partner managing NZXT’s Flex subscription service—as a stolen rental unit that the original seller lacked the authority to sell.
The rental unit, identified as an NZXT Flex One model with an approximate value of $1,500, was rendered unusable through a remote trigger. Fragile intervened after the user shared their experience online, requesting documentation such as receipts and seller communications to verify the transaction before offering a resolution.
Fragile provided the user with a new computer at no additional cost. As part of the agreement, the user is required to surrender the original, blocked machine to local law enforcement. The company stated it intends to pursue the individual who illegally sold the rental hardware.
NZXT’s rental program launched in 2024. The service previously faced legal challenges, including a California RICO lawsuit that resulted in a $3.45 million settlement earlier this year. Observers have characterized this specific resolution as a positive outcome for the affected consumer.
