Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of PlayStation, recently shared his vision for the future of entertainment during an event at the University of Electro-Communications. Kutaragi suggests that the industry is at a major turning point where artificial intelligence will fundamentally transform human sensory experiences.
Kutaragi argues that current game development, which relies on massive resources for minor graphical improvements, has stagnated compared to the potential of AI. He predicts that by 2028 or 2029, technology will enable real-time generation of images and music at the speed of modern consoles, allowing personal fantasies to become interactive content.
The former executive criticizes modern "human-centered design" for limiting user engagement and over-simplifying interfaces. Instead, he advocates for a future where humans learn to communicate directly with AI as they would with other people, treating these systems as living entities capable of evolving alongside their creators.
Looking ahead, Kutaragi envisions the global gaming market expanding from 30 trillion yen to 3,000 trillion yen as entertainment evolves beyond traditional games. He emphasizes the importance of fostering international, collaborative environments like the new Entertainment Creation Research Education Center to cultivate the talent necessary to realize these future possibilities.
