Recent market data indicates that physical media continues to hold a notable share of the gaming market. According to Ampere Analysis, boxed copies accounted for 35% of worldwide sales for Marvel's Wolverine during its September launch month, representing approximately 756,000 units out of an estimated 2.16 million total copies sold.
Regional preferences for physical formats show significant variance. While GSD data reveals that 51% of European sales for the title were physical, consumer behavior differs sharply by nation. For instance, two-thirds of sales in the United Kingdom were digital, whereas France saw over two-thirds of purchases made via physical discs.
Other recent releases also demonstrated varying levels of physical demand. Silent Hill: Townfall saw over 45% of its sales attributed to boxed copies, while The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha on PlayStation 5 reached 36% and 30% respectively.
These figures arrive amid Sony's stated intention to cease disc production for new PlayStation titles by January 2028. Although rumors suggest potential delays to this digital-only strategy, the company's official messaging maintains this timeline. Industry analysts note that these sales patterns remain subject to fluctuations in pricing and product availability.
