Riot Games co-founder and chief product officer Marc Merrill discussed the halting of development on the fighting game 2XKO during an appearance on The Lemonade Stand podcast.
Merrill attributed the decision to low player traffic and the release of Capcom's Street Fighter 6, noting that the title arrived roughly 8 years after development on 2XKO began.
The chief product officer stated that the project required hundreds of thousands or even millions of monthly players to break even, expectations that were described as detached from the actual market.
Historical peak player figures on Steam for other prominent fighting games include 72,217 for Street Fighter 6, 49,977 for Tekken 8, 44,303 for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and 38,129 for Mortal Kombat 1.
2XKO will remain online until further notice, with the mercenary Samira marking the final content update before updates cease by the end of the year.
