Nintendo has officially confirmed it has no plans to abandon physical game cartridges. Bill van Zyll, the company's VP and General Manager for Latin America, stated in an interview that Nintendo remains agnostic regarding distribution formats, prioritizing consumer preference for physical media.

Despite this commitment, physical releases are evolving due to storage limitations. Modern cartridges for the Switch and Switch 2 are capped at 32GB and 64GB, respectively. Consequently, some publishers now utilize game-key cards, which provide a license to download data while still allowing for trade and resale.

Economic factors also influence Nintendo's physical strategy. As of May 2026, physical first-party titles are priced $10 higher than digital versions, a change Nintendo attributes to the costs of manufacturing and distribution, while noting that digital prices were reduced to pass savings to players.

While Sony is actively phasing out physical discs, Nintendo intends to maintain its current approach throughout the Switch 2's projected six to seven-year lifespan. This ensures that physical media will remain a supported option for the foreseeable future.
