Kazuo 'Kaz' Hirai, who led the PlayStation division between 2007 and 2012, recently discussed his unconventional management philosophy. During his tenure, Hirai frequently disregarded directives from Sony's central headquarters, maintaining that the PlayStation brand operated independently from the broader corporate structure.
Hirai noted that he often ignored instructions from then-CEO Howard Stringer. By asserting that headquarters' mandates were irrelevant to PlayStation's specific needs, he fostered a distinct identity for the gaming branch during a critical period for the company's console business.
When Hirai later transitioned to CEO of Sony Corporation, he faced skepticism from staff who questioned his leadership and motives. To address these concerns, he implemented a strategy focused on transparency and unity, traveling extensively to global offices and factories to build mutual respect among his teams.
His career included overseeing the design of the PlayStation 4 and managing the 2011 PlayStation Network hack, which caused a 23-day service outage. Hirai, who also oversaw the launch of Sony Entertainment Network, eventually departed the company in 2018, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry.
