New Blood Interactive boss Dave Oshry is rejecting the traditional blockbuster strategy of milking successful intellectual properties for sequels. Instead of expanding into a massive studio with hundreds of employees, Oshry intends to maintain independence to avoid pressure from shareholders and investors who typically demand constant growth and franchise exploitation.
The publisher-developer is reinvesting profits from its successful boomer shooters into new, diverse projects such as Gloomwood, Fallen Aces, and Tenebris Somnia. While the company continues to support existing titles like Dusk and Amid Evil with updates, Oshry emphasizes that the studio focuses on creating games they are passionate about rather than meeting corporate deadlines or shipping products solely to satisfy financial balance sheets.
Oshry argues that this creative autonomy directly benefits developers. He notes that if he had forced creator David Szymanski to develop a sequel to Dusk, the project Iron Lung would never have existed. Consequently, Szymanski would not have achieved the success of the Iron Lung film, which Oshry reports earned $50 million at the box office.
Reflecting on the broader industry, Oshry characterizes the current focus on endless sequels and IP obsession as unsustainable, citing recent layoffs and the struggles of large-scale studios. By avoiding the trend-chasing common in AAA development, New Blood aims to maintain stability by producing games that align with their specific audience's interests.
