Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space, has publicly criticized Krafton for the troubled development and release of The Callisto Protocol. Schofield claims the publisher rescinded a promised three-month development extension, forcing the studio to launch the title in December 2022 instead of March 2023.

The development process faced significant hurdles due to the Covid pandemic, which impacted team health and operational continuity. Schofield noted that the studio had to adapt to remote work while managing frequent staff illnesses, which he argues made the project's timeline unsustainable under the pressure of management demands.

Schofield further alleged that Krafton lacked experience in publishing single-player physical games. He stated that management mandated a PlayStation 4 release alongside the PlayStation 5 version, an additional requirement that cost $20 million and necessitated distributing 200 development kits during a global chip shortage.

Following a mixed critical reception, where Eurogamer reviewer Vikki Blake praised the production values but criticized the lack of depth and tension, Schofield oversaw the release of 86 patches to address performance issues. Despite these efforts, he reports that Krafton viewed the game's financial performance as a failure.
