Epic Games has launched a preview version of its redesigned application, built entirely from scratch using artificial intelligence. The company describes this unconventional development approach as "vibe coding," aiming to bypass the complexities of traditional programming to create a faster, more responsive interface.
The new architecture prioritizes extreme efficiency, requiring only 300 MB of storage. Key features include a revamped download manager, library, and store interface, alongside cross-play support for text and voice groups with Fortnite. Additionally, the launcher is now available on Linux, with ongoing work to adapt Easy Anti-Cheat for future support of Fortnite on that platform.
Valve responded to this technical challenge by releasing a major update for Steam on October 13, 2026. This patch significantly improves performance, reducing cold startup times from ten seconds to approximately five seconds to match Epic's metrics. The update also introduces new features like "Big Art" mode, improved multi-user session management, and enhanced Proton compatibility for non-Steam Windows executables.
This rivalry highlights contrasting product strategies between the two companies. While Epic Games focuses on a minimalist, lightweight design, Valve continues to maintain and expand the extensive ecosystem of Steam, including optimizations for network latency and Remote Play via the experimental Pyrowave codec.
