Tarn Adams, the creator of Dwarf Fortress, has publicly expressed his firm opposition to incorporating generative AI into his development process. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Adams highlighted the industry-wide anxiety surrounding the technology, noting that many employees fear being replaced by tools that currently lack the capability to perform their roles effectively.

Beyond ethical concerns, Adams pointed to technical drawbacks, specifically the negative impact of AI-generated code on software performance. He observed that such code often lacks necessary optimization, leading to inefficient programs that cause hardware to struggle. Adams stated that even if the technology were more capable, he would still choose to avoid it.

Adams noted that the only scenario forcing his hand would be if platform requirements, such as those on Windows, mandated the use of generative tools for software recognition. However, he remains focused on the continued development of Dwarf Fortress, including upcoming features like boat transport and complex player-driven mechanics involving in-game computers.
