The classic game Doom has been adapted to run on a Domain Name System (DNS) database. Corey Quinn, writing for The Register, compiled the game for a 32-bit machine where memory and arithmetic operations are handled directly within DNS records.
The project functions by utilizing 6.4 million rows of truth tables. Quinn explains that the database acts as a librarian, providing precomputed answers for operations. By leveraging RFC 2136 DNS UPDATE, the system replicates conditional logic, allowing variables to change within the game world.
Paul Vixie, a pioneer of DNS technology, remarked that he could not decide if the project was "deliciously horrible, or else horribly delicious." He noted it is the most impressive application of DNS UPDATE he has encountered.
Performance is currently limited, with each update taking over 54 seconds. This falls significantly short of the game's standard 35 tics per second, making it far from a practical gaming experience. The source code is available on GitHub for those interested in the project.
