At the 2025 Game Awards, comedian Andrew Schulz, who stars as Dan Hibiki in the upcoming Street Fighter film, made a viral remark targeting the cast of the second Mortal Kombat movie. Schulz jokingly invited the Mortal Kombat cast to the stage, only to follow up by claiming they were absent because they prioritized money over their fans.

Schulz later explained that his comments were intended as a good-natured, pro-wrestling-style "work" designed to generate buzz for both franchises. He compared the desired outcome to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, hoping to foster a friendly rivalry that would benefit both films.

The stunt drew criticism from fans and actor Lewis Tan, who felt the jab was inappropriate. Despite the backlash, Schulz and his co-stars, including Cody Rhodes and Eric Andre, clarified they hold no genuine animosity toward the Mortal Kombat franchise and are open to a potential crossover film.

While the cast expressed interest in future collaborations, director Kitao Sakurai noted that the future of the Street Fighter film series depends on the performance of the first movie. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.
