Rockstar Games has spent eight years developing the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. While the studio previously faced significant delays, including shifting resources to complete Red Dead Redemption 2, leadership now anticipates a more efficient production schedule for future titles.

Development leads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut attribute this potential for increased speed to the new engine, tools, and team structure established during the current project. By avoiding the need to overhaul these foundational systems again, the studio aims to produce compelling content more rapidly.

The project faced internal skepticism regarding its 2025 release window, eventually requiring Head of Publishing Jennifer Kolbe to negotiate delays with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. While Kolbe acknowledges that studio conditions are not perfect, she notes that current crunch levels are improved compared to the development of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Looking ahead, Rockstar may pivot toward more frequent releases or diverse projects. Potential future directions include delivering story-based DLC, branching into distinct titles similar to Bully, or focusing on the rumored PC port of GTA 6, which some reports suggest could arrive as early as 2027.
