Kodansha announced that the neo-nostalgic horror adventure game 1999 Tokoyo Building, developed by Tokoyo Real Estate, will launch on PC via Steam on November 10, 2026. Set in December 1999, the story follows Akira Hiruyuki, who becomes trapped in a derelict indoor amusement park where people reportedly vanish. After being caught trespassing by the owner, Yano, Akira is forced to work as a live-in employee to survive among dangerous colleagues.
The gameplay alternates between exploration and visual novel segments. During exploration, players utilize Akira's lockpicking skills to infiltrate colleagues' private rooms to uncover secrets. In conversation segments, players make choices that affect character reactions via Live2D animations. Caution is required, as offending colleagues can lead to immediate death, though knowing too much also carries risks.
The game features an interactive soundtrack by Yasuhiro Nakashima, designed to shift according to the protagonist's emotional state. Players should note that the title contains violent, shocking imagery and depictions related to suicide. Additionally, the project includes merchandise plans through Animate, with further details to be shared by Kodansha Game Lab.
A free demo covering the entire first chapter, approximately two hours in length, is currently available on Steam. This demo introduces key characters like the Count and Camellia. To support the release, official gameplay footage is being published on YouTube in eight daily installments, with the first video already live.
