On October 8, Okta Japan released findings from the 2026 Global Authentication Survey, conducted in partnership with Yubico. The study gathered insights from approximately 2,000 technology and security professionals across nine countries, including Japan, to evaluate current authentication trends.
Despite 87% of security experts being familiar with passkeys, 43% still rely on passwords for work logins. Furthermore, 52% of respondents reported receiving traditional username and password credentials upon joining their organizations. Okta identifies these legacy habits as a more significant barrier to security than a lack of employee knowledge.
The report notes that 70% of participants observed an increase in phishing attempts over the past year, with 44% reporting successful AI-driven attacks. Because only 36% of people could correctly identify human-written messages in tests, Okta argues that relying on employee vigilance is insufficient against modern AI threats.
Okta advocates for a shift toward structural security, such as phishing-resistant authentication like passkeys. Additionally, while AI agent adoption for tasks like scheduling is outpacing security controls, Okta urges companies to maintain human-in-the-loop approval processes for high-risk actions to prevent errors.
