Brandon Stirrup, a senior business strategy manager at Xbox, recently claimed that game studios failing to integrate artificial intelligence are preparing for a fake future. Stirrup asserted that the gaming sector is uniquely slow to adopt these technologies due to negative user sentiment and leadership reluctance, despite widespread usage of AI tools within the industry.

To demonstrate the potential of these tools, Stirrup shared a football game he developed in approximately three hours of active work. He noted that he had no prior game development experience and relied on an AI agent to iterate on the project, suggesting that custom, tailored gaming experiences are currently accessible through simple prompts.

The remarks sparked significant backlash, leading Stirrup to deactivate his social media account. According to PC Gamer, an Xbox source confirmed the account was taken offline due to the high volume of responses. Microsoft has not issued an official statement, and the comments are viewed as personal opinions rather than corporate policy.

While industry sentiment remains largely skeptical, Microsoft has recently formalized Xbox Labs to explore AI experiments. Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma has previously expressed a desire to incorporate AI while avoiding what she described as soulless AI slop, highlighting the complex internal and external landscape regarding generative technology in gaming.
