A recent Fortune profile featuring Xbox CEO Asha Sharma suggests that Microsoft is developing a next-generation console codenamed Project Helix. Current internal projections estimate the device could retail between $1,200 and $1,800, significantly higher than the $799.99 price point of the current Xbox Series X.
The hardware roadmap reportedly includes a next-gen handheld device slated for the 2027 holiday season, with the Helix console following in 2028. Development teams are currently facing increased pressure as engineering deadlines for the console have been accelerated by several months.
Internal disagreements occurred regarding the handheld's operating system, with conflict arising between Windows leadership and the Xbox team over software performance. While a senior executive allegedly threatened to cancel the project, the teams are reportedly continuing to collaborate on the development process.
Microsoft has not officially confirmed pricing, and while subsidies could potentially lower costs, the company's 3% profit margin may limit such options. Furthermore, industry analysts anticipate tighter memory supply in 2027 and 2028, which could contribute to higher costs for next-generation gaming hardware.
