Microsoft is reportedly preparing a significant restructuring of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. According to a Fortune profile on Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the company intends to transition toward a tiered model that allows users to select specific features in an à la carte manner.
The proposed system would enable subscribers to customize their experience by choosing individual add-ons. These options reportedly include access to cloud gaming, multiplayer capabilities, and specific console-only game content, moving away from the current all-inclusive structure.
Internal challenges have reportedly influenced this strategic shift. Former employees indicated that the existing subscription model caused a cannibalization of sales for premium first-party titles during their initial launch windows, while conflicting internal metrics regarding subscription versus store revenue further complicated the service's performance.
This potential overhaul follows other recent initiatives under CEO Asha Sharma, who has been in her role for approximately six months. Her tenure has already included price adjustments for Game Pass Ultimate and organizational changes such as shifting Halo development to Activision.
