According to a report by Fortune, Microsoft is planning a major overhaul of the Xbox Game Pass service. Sources indicate that the company intends to transition toward a modular subscription model, allowing users to customize their experience based on individual needs.
The proposed system would utilize a tiered structure, enabling players to select specific features such as console exclusives, cloud gaming, or multiplayer access. This strategy follows comments from CEO Asha Sharma in April 2026, who noted that a single subscription model cannot satisfy the diverse preferences of the global gaming community.
The service has faced significant challenges, with subscriber counts dropping to 30 million in July 2026, down from a peak of 34 million in February 2024. Fortune reports that former employees have highlighted issues regarding the cannibalization of blockbuster sales and difficulties in measuring game success due to inconsistent internal metrics, a concern echoed by developers like Chris Hays.
While the Ultimate tier price was adjusted to 20,99€ in April 2026, the service has implemented measures like cloud gaming time limits and a freeze on third-party game signings to mitigate losses. No official launch window for the new à la carte subscription system has been announced.
