Key information
Nearly a decade following the release of the third entry, the real-time strategy series returns with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV. The project is currently being developed by King Art Games, the studio previously responsible for the 2020 steampunk title Iron Harvest.
The developer is positioning this new installment as a modern interpretation of the original game. Early preview sessions suggest the title functions as a more successful and faithful combination of the mechanics found in the first two entries than the previous attempt.
Dawn of War III was criticized for its MOBA-inspired maps and shallow systems, which failed to satisfy either traditional strategy fans or the esports community. Players specifically disliked the heavy focus on hero characters, leading to a general consensus that the game lacked a clear identity.
While the series has historically reinvented its core gameplay, this latest iteration aims to move past the divisive design choices of its predecessor. The preview build indicates a potential return to form for the franchise as it seeks to reconcile the series' varied mechanical history.
