Aisata Diallo, a lifelong braider and founder of Tressfecta, is developing a new tool called Plait Pilot to address the physical strain associated with professional hair braiding. Diallo, who previously operated a small business while at Northeastern University, noted that the manual nature of the craft often leads to issues like carpal tunnel syndrome and cramping for stylists.
The Plait Pilot device aims to automate the time-consuming process of separating hair from packs before braiding begins. By allowing a stylist to set a desired size, the machine separates and dispenses hair pieces, which can save hours of labor during complex styles.
Diallo acknowledges that creating hardware for this industry is difficult due to the nuance of different hair textures, lengths, and densities. She emphasizes that the technology cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution, as the braiding process remains highly complex.
Tressfecta is currently pre-launch and refining its prototype while bootstrapping and utilizing grant funding. Diallo is preparing to fundraise and is actively connecting with stylists to test the technology, recently showcasing the project as part of TechCrunch’s Battlefield 200 companies.
