Rockstar Games provided developers with significant creative freedom during the production of GTA 6, allowing staff to implement various details simply because they were considered cool. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, this autonomy means that even top executives at the studio are likely unaware of every specific addition made to the game's version of Vice City.
This approach mirrors the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, where features like horse testicles with realistic physics were added without being part of a formal requirement list. Rockstar's Aaron Garbut noted that no single person possesses a complete mental map of the entire project, a sentiment that continues to define the team's workflow.
The development process faced significant challenges between 2019 and 2022 as the team struggled to balance realistic gameplay mechanics with the series' traditional arcade-style systems. These difficulties led to internal feelings of stagnation and the departure of some designers before the project's vision solidified in 2023.
Technical experimentation also occurred, with the team spending years attempting to replace the traditional weapon wheel with alternative interfaces like trays and webs. Ultimately, these efforts were abandoned in favor of the classic system. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.
