This approach mirrors the creation of realistic horse testicles in Red Dead Redemption 2, which featured physics that reacted to cold weather. Aaron Garbut noted that such additions were not mandated by leadership but emerged when staff had the time and initiative to pursue them. Consequently, players can expect to discover new details in Vice City for years.
Development faced challenges between 2019 and 2022 as the team struggled to balance Red Dead Redemption's realism with traditional arcade-style systems. Designers spent years experimenting with alternatives to the weapon wheel, including UI updates and trays, before ultimately reverting to the classic design. Some staff felt they were treading water during this period, leading to personnel departures.
With some artists contributing since 2015, the project is nearing completion. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, marking the end of a lengthy development cycle that involved extensive research trips to Miami.
