Activision recently launched ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for PlayStation platforms. These titles have achieved significant commercial success, reportedly selling over 11 million copies combined on PS4 and PS5.
Gavin Goslin, a former developer at Treyarch who worked on the original titles, described the success as bittersweet. While he expressed pride in the games' continued popularity in 2026, he criticized the company for failing to share financial gains with the original creators.
Goslin highlighted the intense crunch periods endured by the development team to ensure the games' quality. He argued that executives receiving bonuses from the longevity of these titles should retroactively share that wealth with the developers who built the original code.
The releases are direct ports rather than remasters, lacking new features or updates. This approach satisfied fan demand, as the games were previously unavailable on PS4 or PS5. Activision marketing executive Tyler Bahl noted that the company underestimated the scale of this pent-up demand.
