Embark Studios is updating The Finals for Season 12, featuring a new dynamic commentary system. The game's in-universe announcer, Scotty, will now be able to shout out player usernames during specific in-game events.
Audio Director Carl Strandberg explains that the system is designed to integrate player names into the show's narrative. To maintain quality, the developer is restricting the technology to a curated set of scenarios where the announcer provides real-time feedback on noteworthy player actions.
While the update aims to enhance the game show atmosphere, it raises concerns regarding potential misuse. Critics note that similar AI-driven voice technologies have previously faced challenges with inappropriate content, and the effectiveness of Embark's safeguards against players testing these boundaries remains uncertain.
Launching Tuesday, October 20, Season 12 also adds the Translocator and Mimic Device gadgets alongside a 12-player Solo Showdown tournament mode. Furthermore, the update includes technical improvements such as more natural destruction physics, reactive smoke, and enhanced footstep audio for better enemy tracking.
