Unknown Worlds Entertainment has announced a significant update for the early access version of Subnautica 2, available on Steam and Xbox Series. The studio describes this upcoming content release as early access 2.0 due to the substantial volume of improvements and new features it introduces to the survival game.
Creative director Anthony Gallegos detailed the update in a development vlog, highlighting a new region featuring unique biomes and creatures. This area is described as one of the most terrifying environments created for the series, balancing lethal threats with a beautiful aesthetic. Additionally, the update will incorporate new gadgets, gameplay adjustments, and narrative elements that expand the game's lore.
Reviewers have praised the title for refining the original game's mechanics, noting an optimized resource gathering system and accessible construction tools. The game, which supports solo play or four-player online cooperative sessions, is currently planned to remain in early access for two to three years before reaching version 1.0.
Subnautica 2 launched in early access on May 14, 2026, for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, as well as on Xbox Series X|S. It is currently included in Game Pass, though a PlayStation 5 version has not been confirmed by the developer.
