Capcom and Legendary's latest live-action Street Fighter adaptation debuted in theaters on Oct. 16. The film achieved a significant milestone for the franchise, earning $31 million domestically during its opening weekend according to BoxOfficeMojo data.

This performance surpasses the opening weekends of the two previous live-action adaptations combined. The 1994 film starring Jean Claude Van Damme opened to $6.8 million, while 2010's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li earned $4.7 million during its debut.

While critics have not favored the film, audience reception is notably higher than its predecessors. The movie currently holds a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, significantly outperforming the 20% and 18% scores held by the 1994 and 2010 entries, respectively.

Despite the record-breaking start, the film faces financial challenges, as it must still recoup its $82 million budget. Comparisons have been drawn to the performance of Mortal Kombat 2, which grossed $129 million earlier this year. The movie, directed by Kitao Sakurai, concludes with a teaser for a potential sequel.
