On October 20, developer Landfall announced the temporary suspension of Steam Workshop functionality for its survival horror game Content Warning. This decision follows the discovery of unofficial mods potentially containing malware. The developer has advised users to delete all installed mods until the situation is resolved and safety can be ensured.
While specific details regarding the malware's exact operations remain unconfirmed, community reports on platforms like Discord and Reddit suggest the malicious software may steal personal information. Allegations include the theft of credentials to hijack Discord accounts and distribute suspicious links to friends. Furthermore, some reports indicate the malware possesses self-replicating capabilities, potentially using stolen Steam credentials to upload infected mods back to the Workshop.
This incident mirrors recent security issues in other titles, such as People Playground, which experienced similar malware concerns in September and February. While Steam Workshop significantly simplifies mod distribution and installation, these recurring events highlight the risks associated with its convenience. The potential for self-replicating threats complicates mitigation, as simply removing individual files may not be sufficient to stop the spread.
Landfall is currently investigating the situation to restore safe access. In the interim, users who recently utilized mods for Content Warning are encouraged to delete them, perform virus scans, update passwords for online services, and enable two-factor authentication to protect their accounts from potential compromise.
