While the company did not specify the total number of impacted users, it indicated that the security issue likely arises from players reusing identical email addresses and passwords across various services and external companies.
To mitigate these risks, the developer advises users to implement unique credentials for the MMORPG and utilize one-time passwords. Square Enix is currently distributing password reset emails to individuals suspected of being affected, though it noted that these notifications might be sent to all account holders as a precautionary measure.
Beyond standard password protocols, the company recommends employing Software Authenticators. It also offers physical Security Tokens for $14.99 to enhance account protection, though these official hardware devices are currently sold out on the Square Enix Online Store.
Final Fantasy XIV remains available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2. Looking ahead, the FFXIV Evercold expansion is scheduled for release in January 2027, while the Japanese version of the game has introduced same-region player matching.
