Sloclap, the studio behind the action game Sifu, has released REMATCH, a 5v5 multiplayer soccer game. Creative Director Pierre Tarno explains that despite the genre shift, both titles share a core focus on physicality, precise animation, and responsive controls. While Sifu emphasized individual combat, REMATCH pivots to team-based cooperation and tactical positioning.
REMATCH features a fast-paced, continuous gameplay loop without fouls or out-of-bounds interruptions. Tarno notes that the team intentionally avoided traditional rules like offsides to maintain the game's rhythm. Instead, the design forces players to manage defensive pressure, encouraging constant passing and movement rather than individual ball retention.
Unlike traditional soccer simulations that use overhead views, REMATCH utilizes a third-person perspective to immerse players as individual athletes. Tarno emphasizes that all characters possess identical stats to ensure fairness, meaning success relies entirely on player skill, positioning, and communication. This focus on equality extends to the game's collaboration with the manga Blue Lock, where character appearances are purely cosmetic.
Released in June 2025, REMATCH reached 5 million users within its first month. The game is currently in its fifth season, featuring a collaboration with the soccer manga Blue Lock.
